Charles "Gene" Barnard, 92, of Malta, Montana. Barnard has been a cattle rancher in the area for 64 years after returning from the Marines to help his short-staffed father with the operation. Barnard is a neighbor to the American Prairie Foundation's preserve land, privately purchased parcels of ranchland bought with the intention of restoring biodiversity to the Montana Prairie. Part of that mission includes returning bison and black footed ferret to the land, removing fences and structures, and natual cycle that better mimics a pre-settlement era.
